This page gives an overview of U.S. school shootings and firearm incidents that have taken place since 1990. The information represents shootings that have occurred in K-12 schools and district offices. It does not detail college or university shootings. The table and regional list below include incidents that occurred on school grounds after regular hours as well as incidents that did not involve teachers or students. This list does not include suicides or suicide attempts where no other individuals were harmed. The list below may not be comprehensive and is compiled from incidents reported in the media and sent in by readers.

The breakdown of regional gun violence in K-12 schools is as follows:

  • Midwest: 77 incidents of gun violence, which resulted in 40 fatalities and 98 injuries
Deadliest incident: Red Lake High School massacre on March 21, 2005, where a 16-year-old student killed five fellow students, one teacher, and a security guard before killing himself.
  • Northeast: 45 incidents of gun violence, which resulted in 53 fatalities and 45 injuries
Deadliest incident: Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre on December 14, 2012, where a 20-year-old man killed 20 children and 6 adults before taking his own life.
  • South: 173 incidents of gun violence, which resulted in 105 fatalities and 226 injuries
Deadliest incident: Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting on February 14, 2018, where a former student killed 17 people and wounded at least a dozen others before being arrested by police.
  • West: 92 incidents of gun violence, which resulted in 75 fatalities and 171 injuries
Deadliest incident: Columbine High School massacre on April 20, 1999, where two students, an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old, killed twelve students and one teacher, before shooting and killing themselves.

Midwest

Illinois

  • October 26, 2021 in Chicago, Illinois
Shots were fired during a fight outside Jose de Diego Community Academy. No one was injured in the gunfire.[1]
  • October 13, 2021 in Chicago, Illinois
Shots fired from a passing vehicle at a pedestrian struck James McDade Classical School, breaking one window. No one was injured.[2]
  • October 12, 2021 in Chicago, Illinois
Shots were fired at the exterior doors of Wendell Phillips Academy High School as they were opened to let students out for the day. A security guard and a 14-year-old girl were injured.[3]
  • September 23, 2021 in Joliet, Illinois
A window at the St. Paul School was shot out during an exchange of gunfire between two moving vehicles. Although classes were in session at the time, the students were in the basement and no injuries were reported.[4]
  • August 22, 2021 in Rockford, Illinois
A 13-year-old boy was shot during a fist fight in the parking lot of West Middle School. He was expected to survive as of the day after the shooting. A 17-year-old was taken into custody.[5]
  • January 10, 2021 in Springfield, Illinois
A 16-year-old girl practicing driving in the parking lot of Southeast High School and a 20-year-old woman who was in the car with her were shot and injured. There were no fatalities.[6]
  • May 8, 2019 in Chicago, Illinois
Andres Salazar, 18, was accused of shooting a 19-year-old student at Second Chance High School. As Salazar was driving by the school, he allegedly shot the student in the neck and jaw. Salazar was charged with attempted first-degree murder.[7]
  • September 20, 2017 in Mattoon, Illinois
One student was injured in a shooting at Mattoon High School. The shooter was a student who was believed to have acted alone. The shots were fired in the school cafeteria during the lunch hour, and the shooter was subdued by a teacher before being taken into custody by a school resource officer and then the police. No other injuries were reported.[8]
  • June 16, 2017 in Chicago, Illinois
Three people were charged in a drive-by shooting that occurred at Warren Elementary School. Two students—ages 7 and 13—were shot during an end-of-the-year picnic attended by current elementary school students. Police reported that the picnic was not the target. The shooters were allegedly aiming for former Warren Elementary School students who had been standing nearby and ran into the picnic after the shooting began.[9]
  • January 27, 2014 in Carbondale, Illinois
After an altercation in the parking lot of Rebound High School, a student pulled a gun and shot another student. The student's injuries were not fatal; however, they were potentially life-threatening. The shooter was Omari A. Tinsley, 18.[10]
  • September 7, 2012 in Normal, Illinois
A 14-year-old student at Normal High School fired multiple shots at the ceiling before being tackled by a teacher. No one was injured in the incident.[11]
  • January 9, 2009 in Chicago, Illinois
Following a basketball game at Dunbar High School, Georgio Dukes, 18, pulled up in his car and unleashed gunfire. Five people were wounded in the attack.[12]
  • September 13, 2005 in Chicago, Illinois
Two teens got into a fist fight at Harlan Community Academy High School when one of the boys took out a pistol and shot the other in the foot. The student, 15, was the only one injured in the incident.[13]
  • October 17, 1994 in Chicago, Illinois
A teenage boy on a bicycle fired a shot into a crowd of students outside of Hubbard High School, wounding a 16-year-old female student in the thigh. She survived the gunshot.[14]
  • September 17, 1993 in Darien, Illinois
Phillip Powell, 15, shot and killed Barrett Modisette, 17, in the Hinsdale South High School parking lot during a football game. Two weeks before the shooting, Modisette and Powell, a self-described gang member, had an argument.[15]
  • November 20, 1992 in Chicago, Illinois
Joseph White, 16, shot and killed DeLondyn Lawson, 15, at Tilden High School. Both White and Lawson were members of rival gangs. White also shot two other students, but they survived.[16]

Indiana

  • August 27, 2021 in Hammond, Indiana
Two students were shot shortly after classes at Hammond Central High School were dismissed for the weekend. Authorities believed the students had been shot by the same bullet, which appeared to have exited out of the first student's arm before impacting the second student. Neither student had life-threatening injuries. Authorities said they believed the shooting had been targeted rather than a random act of violence.[17]
  • May 25, 2018 in Noblesville, Indiana
A student shot and wounded a teacher and another student before being taken into custody Noblesville West Middle School.[18]
  • January 22, 2016 in Indianapolis, Indiana
A 15-year old student from Lawerence Central High School was injured in a shooting outside of a basketball game. The student did not suffer any fatal injuries. Paul Rayner, a student at Lawerence North High School, was charged in connection with the shooting.[19]
  • March 25, 2011 in Martinsville, Indiana
Michael Phelps, a teen student who had been suspended from Martinsville West Middle School, reentered the school and fired two shots at a fellow student. The student's wounds were not fatal.[20]
  • March 30, 2001 in Gary, Indiana
Donald R. Burt Jr., 17, a former student at Lew Wallace High School, entered the school and shot a 16-year-old student before school let out for the day. The student was fatally wounded.[21]

Iowa

  • January 31, 2014 in Des Moines, Iowa
Following a basketball game at North High School, gunfire erupted in the parking lot. One female student was injured in the incident.[22]
  • July 25, 1994 in Ottumwa, Iowa
Michael Coffman shot, 16, shot and killed Jeramy Wayne Allen, 15, at Ottumwa High School after an argument.[23]

Michigan

  • November 30, 2021 in Oxford, Michigan
A 15-year-old student at Oxford High School carried out a mass shooting, killing four other students and injuring six students and a teacher. The shooter was taken into custody.[24]
  • September 8, 2021 in Royal Oak Township, Michigan
Police responded to reports of a shooting that had taken place in the parking lot of the Tri-County Education Center. Upon arriving to the scene, they arrested two teenagers. Following the incident, police said one of the teens had been challenged to a fight by several others and had brandished a knife. One of the individuals who had challenged him to a fight left and returned shortly after with a gun, firing a single shot into the ground.[25]
  • June 21, 2019 in Flint, Michigan
Four students aged 14 to 16 were arrested for their alleged involvement in the shooting of Eithan Williams, 15, during a basketball game at Carman-Ainsworth High School. Williams survived the gunshot wound.[26]
  • November 3, 2017 in Lansing, Michigan
A 15-year-old girl was shot in the parking lot of Pattengill Academy while sitting in the backseat of a car. She did not attend Pattengill Academy. Khalil Jamal Withers-Fleming was the main suspect in the case and turned himself in. The injuries were found to be non-life-threatening.[27]
  • February 10, 2016 in Muskegon Heights, Michigan
Two high school students were among four people shot in the parking lot of Muskegon Heights High School following a basketball game.[28]
  • April 11, 2014 in Detroit, Michigan
After a student awards ceremony, four gang members fired gunshots into a crowd in the parking lot of East English Village Preparatory Academy and shot and killed Darryl Smith, 19.[29]
  • January 11, 2013 in Detroit, Michigan
A teen was shot after a basketball game at Osborn High School. He was hospitalized in serious condition.[30]
  • December 28, 2011 in Flint, Michigan
Two students, Trevon Neal and Demetrius Anthony Davis Jr., both 17, were arrested after allegedly shooting a student during a basketball game at Northern High School. The student's injuries were not life-threatening.[31]
  • September 8, 2010 in Detroit, Michigan
On the first day of school, Steven Jamal Hare, 17, shot and injured two students at Mumford High School. Hare was charged with intent to kill and sentenced to serve a 27-year prison sentence.[32]
  • October 16, 2008 in Detroit, Michigan
William Morton, 15, killed one and injured three others in a drive-by shooting at Henry Ford High School. The shooting was believed to be an act of retaliation.[33]
  • February 29, 2000 in Flint, Michigan
Dedrick Owens, 6, shot and fatally wounded a fellow student in the stairwell at Buell Elementary School while the students were told to line up. He proceeded to throw the gun into a garbage can and flee into a nearby restroom. The incident was the youngest case of school gun violence at the time. Because of his age and inability to articulate his intent, Owens was not charged for the murder.[34]
  • February 8, 1994 in Detroit, Michigan
Steven Watkins, 19, was shot in his car in Osborn High School's student parking lot of Osborn High School by an unknown assailant and died from his injuries.[35] [36]
  • December 17, 1993 in Chelsea, Michigan
A science teacher at Chelsea High School, Steven Leith, left a staff meeting and returned with a gun, fatally shooting the superintendent and injuring the school's principal and another teacher. The meeting was in regards to Leith making inappropriate comments about a female student. He was convicted of murder in the first degree.[37]
  • November 4, 1992 in Detroit, Michigan
An 18-year-old and two other masked people with guns were questioned in the shooting of six students at Finney High School.[38]
  • November 4, 1992 in Detroit, Michigan
Police were unable to find the person who shot two students at Mumford High School.[38]
  • November 4, 1992 in Detroit, Michigan
A 14-year-old boy was suspected of shooting three Fochs Middle School students as they walked by Marcus Garvey Academy.[38]

Minnesota

  • September 8, 2021 in Minneapolis, Minnesota
Police responded to a report of shots fired at Prairie Seeds Academy. On arriving, they found a man with gunshot wounds and damage to the school building. The man was expected to survive.[39]
  • April 26, 2021 in Plymouth, Minnesota
A student fired several shots into the ceiling at Plymouth Middle School. No one was injured.[40]
  • March 21, 2005 in Red Lake, Minnesota
Jeffrey Weise, 16, killed his grandfather and another adult at Red Lake Indian Reservation before entering Red Lake High School and killing seven people: five students, a teacher, and a security guard. Seven other people were wounded in the massacre. He then committed suicide.[41]
  • September 24, 2003 in Cold Spring, Minnesota
John Jason McLaughlin, 15, shot and killed two fellow students at Rocori High School. He was sentenced to life in prison.[42]

Missouri

  • June 11, 2021 in Florissant, Missouri
William Bellamy, 18, was fatally shot on the grounds of McCluer North High School. Officials arrested a former classmate of Bellamy's, Aurelius Collier, and charged him with luring Bellamy to the school and shooting him.[43]
  • February 12, 2019 in Kansas City, Missouri
Jamya D. Norfleet was sentenced to 28 years in prison for shooting and killing An'Janique Wright, 15, outside of Central High School during a basketball game.[44]
  • April 12, 2018 in Raytown, Missouri
A man was shot and wounded in the parking lot of South Middle School during a track meet.[45]
  • March 30, 2015 in Universal City, Missouri
A 34-year-old man was shot in the buttocks outside Pershing Elementary School. Police believed there to be a dispute between the victim and two other men.[46]
  • February 20, 2014 in Raytown, Missouri
A man was fatally shot in the parking lot outside Raytown School Success Academy. The victim didn't have any apparent connection to the school or the district.[47]
  • February 7, 2014 in Gladstone, Missouri
Linden West Elementary School was locked down after a gunman fired shots in the area. Following the shooting, the suspect engaged in a stand-off with police until 6 p.m. No one was harmed in the incident.[48]
  • October 9, 2006 in Joplin, Missouri
Thomas White, 13, fired one shot from a rifle at Memorial Middle School. He was trying to shoot the principal, but the gun malfunctioned. White was sentenced to 10 years in prison.[49]
  • November 7, 2002 in Liberty, Missouri
A father shot and killed his son during an argument with his wife in the parking lot outside of St. James Catholic School.[50]
  • February 29, 1996 in St. Louis, Missouri
Mark Boyd, 29, hired Malik Nettles, 21, to shoot and kill Kyunia Taylor, 15, who was pregnant with Boyd's unborn daughter. Nettles shot and killed Taylor while she was on a school bus headed for Beaumont High School. Nettles also shot the bus driver, but the bus driver survived. Taylor and Boyd's daughter, Diamond, was delivered by emergency caesarean section, but she died 23 days later. Boyd reportedly did not want Diamond to be born because he was afraid she would have special needs.[51]

Nebraska

  • January 5, 2011 in Omaha, Nebraska
Robert Butler Jr., 18, shot and killed the assistant principal at Millard High School before driving to a parking lot and shooting himself. Butler had received a 19-day suspension from the assistant principal. The principal was also injured in the attack.[52]
  • February 8, 1995 in Chadron, Nebraska
A social studies teacher who was also the basketball coach at Chadron Middle School was shot in the chest by a seventh-grade student. The injury was not fatal.[53]

Ohio

  • September 29, 2021 in East Cleveland, Ohio
A woman was accused of firing a shot into the air during a football game taking place at Shaker Heights Middle School. The woman said she fired the shot as a warning when a group of juveniles threatened three teenagers in her care. There were no injuries reported.[54]
  • September 16, 2021 in Columbus, Ohio
Officers responded to reports of multiple shots fired at Beechcroft High School while a football game was ongoing. Three cars in the parking lot had their rear windows shot out. There were no injuries reported.[55]
  • August 26, 2021 in Toledo, Ohio
A fight broke out during a youth football game at Northpointe Academy Elementary School. One of the coaches fired several shots into the air in an attempt to break up the fight, leading to a police response. There were no injuries or fatalities.[56]
  • August 10, 2021 in Columbus, Ohio
A group of boys were playing with a handgun in the parking lot of East Linden Elementary School when the gun was accidentally fired, injuring one of the teens.[57]
  • March 9, 2021 in Columbus, Ohio
A single shot was fired through a window of Bishop Hartley High School during school hours. There were no fatalities or injuries.[58]
  • August 30, 2019 in Toledo, Ohio
One juvenile was shot in the hip at Central Catholic High School after a football game. Neither of the individuals involved in the altercation attended the school.[59]
  • September 8, 2017 in Columbus, Ohio
Shots were fired at Columbus Scioto High Schools by 18-year-old student Abdan Abdullahi before a staff member was able to intervene and calm the suspect down. Police arrested Abdullahi and charged him with improperly discharging a firearm in a school safety zone. No injuries were reported.[60]
  • January 20, 2017 in West Liberty, Ohio
Two students were injured in a shooting at West Liberty-Salem Middle/High School after a 17-year-old student brought a gun to school and fired several shots in the school hallway before classes began. The two students who were injured were expected to recover. In June 2017, a judge ordered the alleged shooter Ely Serna be tried as an adult in connection with the case.[61] [62]
  • October 13, 2016 in Columbus, Ohio
Two students were shot outside of Linden-McKinley High School. The two students were treated at the scene and later taken to a local hospital where they recovered from their wounds. Two teenagers were arrested a week after the shooting in connection with the incident.[63]
  • February 29, 2016 in Middletown, Ohio
A student brought a gun into the cafeteria at Madison Jr./Sr. High School. He shot into the ceiling before shooting at students. Two students were hit by the bullets and two other students were hit by shrapnel. The Butler County Sheriff's Office identified 14-year old James Austin Hancock as the shooter.[64]
  • February 10, 2014 in Lyndhurst, Ohio
Five shots were fired outside Charles F. Brush High School during a basketball game. No one was injured in the incident.[65]
  • February 27, 2012 in Chardon, Ohio
Thomas "T. J." Lane, 17, entered Chardon High School where he shot and killed killing three students and injured another three. He received a life sentence without the possibility of parole.[66]
  • October 10, 2007 in Cleveland, Ohio
Asa Coon, 14, shot and wounded two students and two teachers at SuccessTech Academy. He then shot and killed himself. Coon had been suspended from the school the previous week for fighting.[67]
  • November 7, 1994 in Wickliffe, Ohio
Keith Ledeger, 37, shot and killed a custodian at Wickliffe Middle School, where Ledeger had been a student. Four other adults were wounded in the attack.[68]

South Dakota

  • September 30, 2015 in Harrisburg, South Dakota
A student allegedly opened fire at Harrisburg High School. The principal of the school, Kevin Lein, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. No one else was injured. The alleged gunman was taken into custody.[69]

Wisconsin

  • December 2, 2019 in Waukesha, Wisconsin
A 17-year-old male student was shot and wounded by law enforcement officers after he pointed a gun at a student's head and at officers during an altercation at Waukesha South High School.[70]
  • July 19, 2017 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
A 32-year-old man was shot multiple times by a 22-year-old suspect during a recreation league basketball game at Hickman Academy Preparatory School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The man who was shot was expected to recover.[71]
  • April 23, 2016 in Antigo, Wisconsin
A former student opened fire on students leaving the prom at Antigo High School in Wisconsin. Two students were injured in the incident. The shooter, identified as 18-year old Jakob Wagner, engaged in a shoot out with police officers. After sustaining a bullet wound, he later died at a local hospital.[72]
  • January 15, 2015 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Michael Riley, 37, was charged after opening fire in the parking lot of Wisconsin Lutheran High School. A student, his father, and a teacher were injured in the incident.[73]
  • November 29, 2010 in Marinette, Wisconsin
Samuel Hengel, 15, held a classroom of students and a teacher hostage at Marinette High School for five hours before shooting himself. No one else was wounded in the incident.[74]
  • September 29, 2006 in Cazenovia, Wisconsin
Eric Hainstock, 15, entered Weston High School and shot and killed the principal. The incident came after the principal gave him a warning for having tobacco. No one else was injured.[75]
  • February 20, 2002 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Joseph Johnson, 16, was shot and killed in the parking lot of Vincent High School during a fight after a basketball game.[76]
  • December 1, 1993 in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin
Former student Leonard D. McDowell, 21, shot and killed associate principal Dale Breitlow, 46, at Wauwatosa West High School.[77]

Northeast

Connecticut

  • June 10, 2021 in Waterbury, Connecticut
Two men were arrested following allegations that they had been firing a handgun in the baseball field of Holy Cross High School in the morning, before classes had started. There were no injuries.[78]
  • December 16, 2019 in New Haven, Connecticut
A man was shot and wounded after dropping off a child he was caring for at the Catholic Academy of New Haven.[79]
  • January 13, 2014 in New Haven, Connecticut
A 14-year-old boy was shot and wounded outside of a basketball game at the Hillhouse High School.[80]
  • December 14, 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut
Adam Lanza, 20, shot and killed his mother at home and then proceeded into Sandy Hook Elementary School where he shot and killed 26 students and staff members. He killed 20 students, all between the ages of 6 and 7, and six adults, including the school's principal. Two other students and the vice principal were also injured. Lanza then shot and killed himself. The massacre was one of the deadliest in United States history.[81] [82]
  • November 4, 1993 in New Britain, Connecticut
Maurice Flanagan, 24, shot and killed Miguel DeJesus, 18, outside of New Britain High School. Flanagan and DeJesus were members of rival gangs.[83]

Delaware

  • April 27, 2021 in Smyrna, Delaware
A 47-year-old man fatally shot his 38-year-old wife on the campus of Smyrna Middle School while they were waiting to pick their daughter up.[84]

Maine

  • October 14, 2021 in Portland, Maine
Police responded to reports of shots fired on the grounds of Reiche Community School overnight.[85]
  • September 28, 2021 in Portland, Maine
A boy was shot in the upper parking lot of South Portland High School. The shooting occurred in the evening, after classes had been let out. The boy's injuries were reported as non-life threatening.[86]

Massachusetts

  • June 8, 2016 in Dorchester, Massachusetts
One student was shot and killed and three other individuals were wounded by unnamed suspects at Jeremiah Burke High School. The shooting happened outside during a fire drill.[87]
  • April 15, 1993 in Acushnet, Massachusetts
David Taber, 44, took three people hostage at Ford Middle School. He shot and killed Carl Day, the school's nurse. Taber was found not guilty of the murder by reason of insanity.[77]

New Hampshire

  • October 15, 1991 in Swanzey, New Hampshire
A 16 year-old dropout walked into his former school and fired a rifle shot, which injured two students when it ricocheted off a beam and broke into fragments. The shooter was arrested after a 15-minute standoff.[88]

New Jersey

  • June 6, 2021 in Maplewood, New Jersey
Two teenagers were shot at the athletics field at Columbia High School late on a Sunday night. One of the teenagers who was shot died. As of July 8, 2021, no arrests had been made.[89]
  • July 18, 2005 in Newark, New Jersey
Special Officer Dwayne Reeves was shot and killed outside of Weequahic High School. Reeves and his partner broke up a fight between two female students and were talking to the students about the fight. The brother of one of the girls, along with another man, pulled up in a car and shot and killed Reeves. The men also shot and wounded Reeves' partner.[90]
  • October 29, 2002 in Jersey City, New Jersey
A student shot and wounded another 15-year-old student at Lincoln High School. The students were in an argument when the shooting ocurred.[91]

New York

  • November 8, 2021 in New York, New York
A 17-year-old boy was shot in the ankle outside Theodore Roosevelt High School. The boy's injuries were reported to be non-life threatening.[92]
  • July 4, 2021 in Rochester, New York
Keon Martin, 16, died after being shot in the parking lot of Rochester School No. 34. Police later determined that Martin had been in a parked car when he was shot and that another person in the car drove Martin to a different location before calling 911.[93]
  • April 29, 2021 in New York, New York
Devonte Lewis, 17, was fatally shot while leaving Urban Dove Charter School. A 15-year-old and 16-year old were later charged with his murder.[94]
  • March 3, 2021 in Ontario, New York
A sheriff's deputy was shot in the foot during a confrontation with a 19-year-old custodian at Wayne Central Middle School. There were no fatalities.[95]
  • February 9, 2004 in East Greenbush, New York

Fanta Bility, an eight-year-old girl, was killed in a shooting that took place shortly after a high school football game at Academy Park High School had ended. Shots were fired in the direction of several police officers, hitting a person standing near the police and prompting police to return fire. The district attorney issued a preliminary finding on September 2, 2021, which stated that there was a high probability that officers had struck four individuals while returning fire, including Bility.[104] [105]

Joel Loarca, 17, shot and killed William E. Parsons Jr., 15, outside of Providence Career & Technical Academy. Loarca was in a fight with a group of students when he shot and killed Parsons, who was waiting for his dad to pick him up from school. Parsons was not involved in the fight. A judge sentenced Loarca to serve life in prison, plus 10 years.[119]

A 17 year-old student at Central High School fired a gun during lunch, injuring two students. Police said the incident stemmed from racial violence between Asian students and white students on campus.[120]

Vermont

Christopher Williams shot and killed a teacher at Essex Elementary School. He also shot and wounded another teacher. School was not in session that day, but teachers were present for training sessions. Before going to the school he shot and killed his girlfriend's mother. A 19-year-old man shot five people near the exit ramp of Ladd-Peebles Stadium, where a high school football game was taking place between Vigor and Williamson high schools. One of the five people shot was reported to have life-threatening injuries.[124]
  • September 24, 2021 in Fairfield, Alabama
A man was shot in the buttocks while tailgating a high school football game. Deputies reported the shots appeared to have been fired from an abandoned home nearby. The man's injuries were reported as non-life threatening.[125]

Early in the morning of August 5, 2021, police responded to reports of gunshots on the campus of Burns Middle School. One victim was located on the scene and another was later checked into the hospital . Both boys had non-life-threatening injuries.[126]

During a lunchroom fight between a 15-year-old and 17-year-old student, the 15-year-old drew a gun and fired a single shot. There were no injuries.[127]

A gun was fired in the school bus loading zone at Greensboro High School during a fight between two students. The shooter was taken to a juvenile facility after being subdued by a fellow student and a teacher. No one was injured.[132]

A teenager at Vigor High School was shot in the abdomen shortly after school was dismissed on October 11, 2016. He survived the shooting after being rushed to a local hospital. Another local teenager, 16-year old Marquis Love, turned himself in to police and took responsibility for the shooting.[133]

Hammad Memon, 14, shot a fellow student to death during a passing period at Discovery Middle School. Memon received a 30-year prison sentence.[134]

A 28-year-old man shot at several buildings in Rogers after two separate stores refused to sell him a gun. Among the buildings the man shot was the press box at the Rogers High School stadium. No one was injured.[136]
  • October 12, 2021 in Little Rock, Arkansas
Classes were dismissed early at Little Rock Central High School after several shots were fired near campus, at least two of which hit the school building. No one was injured.[137]
  • March 1, 2021 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas
A 15-year-old student was shot and killed at Watson Chapel Junior High School.[138]
  • April 1, 2019 in Prescott, Arkansas
A 14-year-old student at Prescott High School brought a handgun to school and shot a classmate in what authorities believed to be a premeditated attack. The shooter was taken into custody and the injured student survived.[139]
  • September 8, 2017 in North Little Rock, Arkansas
Several shots were fired in a parking lot during a football game at North Little Rock High School, resulting in a young person's injury from a ricocheting bullet. The injury was not life-threatening, and the football stadium was put on lockdown following the disturbance.[140]

Andrew Golden, 11, and Mitchell Johnson, 13, fired thirty rounds of shots at Westside Middle School students and faculty as they emptied during a fire alarm intentionally set off by Golden. They killed four students and one teacher and injured ten during the massacre.[141]

Eugene Huff, 17, shot a 16-year-old male sophomore in the leg when they were arguing at Cardozo High School.[146]

Thomas J. Boykin shot and killed James Richardson, 17, at Ballou High School. An 18-year-old student was also grazed in the leg by a bullet. Boykin and Richardson had previous arguments. Boykin was later acquitted of murder charges in the killing of the Richardson.[147]

Arthur Davin Jones III, 19-year-old, was arrested for allegedly shooting a 16-year-old student in the parking lot at a Terry Parker High School football game. The shooting was reportedly gang-related.[151]

Two students were shot and wounded at a football game at Palm Beach Central High School. Gunshots were fired after a fight between students.[152]

Teah Wimberly, 15, fatally shot a fellow student during a passing period at Dillard High School. Police said the shooting appeared to be due to an argument between the girls.[166]

Tyhno Rock, 18, accidentally fired a gun at Edvard Alvonor, 18, while he was showing his friends his gun at North Miami High school. Alvonor died two days later from the gunshot wound.[171]

Former teacher Larry Shelton shot and killed superintendent James Adams at the Lee County School District office. Shelton then shot and killed himself. Shelton had resigned from his position before the murder due to stress.[172]

A 33-year-old man was arrested after firing shots into occupied cars in the parking lot of Bethesda Academy. No one was shot, although one person was injured by broken glass.[173]
  • September 21, 2021 in Atlanta, Georgia
Shots were fired in the parking lot of Toomey Elementary School after two families got into an argument while dropping students off for class. No one was injured.[174]
  • September 17, 2021 in Swainsboro, Georgia
Several shots were fired during a Friday night football game between Dublin and Swainsboro. No injuries were reported.[175]
  • August 13, 2021 in Lithonia, Georgia
A school resource officer at Lithonia High School was responding to a report of two suspicious men in the parking lot when they attempted to rapidly reverse out of the parking lot, hitting multiple other cars. The officer opened fire after the vehicle began driving towards him, injuring one of the men. Both men were taken into custody.[176]

A teenage boy shot nine students with a pellet gun during recess at Wynbrooke Elementary Theme School. All nine survived.[177]

A handgun was accidentally discharged at Banneker High School, injuring two students. One student was shot in the ankle while the other was grazed by the same bullet. The gun was found in a box in a student's bookbag. Three students were charged in conjunction with the shooting.[178]

A student at Marshall County High School fired a handgun inside a crowded atrium until he ran out of ammunition and then fled before being arrested. Two students were killed and 18 other students were injured.[189]
  • September 30, 2014 in Louisville, Kentucky
A student at Fern Creek Traditional High School fired one shot into the hallway, injuring one person. Authorities said the suspected shooter was a 15 to 16 year-old black male.[190]
  • December 1, 1997 in West Paducah, Kentucky
Michael Carneal, 14, opened fire at Heath High School on a group of praying students. Three female students were killed and five other students injured. It was suspected that Carneal had been bullied. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 25 years.[191]

Gary Scott Pennington, 17, fatally shot his East Carter High School teacher after she refused to change a grade. A social studies teacher and the head custodian entered the classroom to investigate. Pennington shot and killed the head custodian. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 25 years.[192]

A 60-year-old woman was shot during a robbery attempt while she was waiting to pick up her grandchildren from the St. Frances de Sales school. The woman was in stable condition as of later in the day.[193]

While trying to break up a fight at a high school basketball game, a New Orleans law enforcement officer was shot and killed at George Washington Carver High School. A suspect was apprehended shortly after the murder of the officer.[194]

A loaded gun fell out of a first-grade student's backpack in a classroom at Moss Bluff Elementary Schools. Another student picked up the gun and accidentally fired it, hitting a third student. The student who was shot was expected to recover. The father and older brother of the student who brought the gun to class were indicted after the gun was found to be kept unsecured in the bedroom the brothers shared.[195] [196]

No one was injured when a freshman student at Scotlandville High School fired shots on school property. The student was believed to have been targeting two students after an alleged fight. A 39-year-old man was found dead in a parked car in the Eastway Elementary School parking lot on Oct. 8, 2021. He appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot. Seth Trickey, 13, brought a gun to Fort Gibson Middle School where he shot and injured five of his classmates. The shooter, an honor student, attributed his outburst to stress over maintaining good grades.[238]

A 54-year-old woman shot her son-in-law while on the campus of Edwards Elementary School. Both had arrived separately to pick up the same child. There were no fatalities.[242]

One student was injured during an accidental shooting in which the shooter shot himself in the foot in the parking lot of Wilson High School. Two people were charged after the incident, including the injured student. No other students were involved or reported any injuries.[243]

Three people were injured after a basketball game held at South Aiken High School. Two suspects were arrested in connection with the incident approximately one week later. The injuries were said to be non-life-threatening.[244]

LaKeeta Cadoree, 15, shot and killed Arthur Jermel Jack, 17, in the cafeteria at Crosby High School. Cadoree was reportedly upset that Jack had called her disparaging names.[287]

Kenneth Wolford, 18, and two other students were arrested and charged with the shooting of three teenagers at Sam Houston High School. Seventeen-year-old John Campbell, 17, was wounded in the right foot; Larry Johnson, 18, was wounded in the right thigh and calf; and a 16-year-old was shot in the chest. Evan Ramsey, 16, shot and killed the school's principal and one student, and wounded two other students at Bethel Regional High School. He was sentenced to 210 years in prison on December 2, 1998, which was later reduced on appeal to two 99-year prison sentences.[295]

  • February 12, 2016 in Glendale, Arizona
Two girls were found dead on the campus of Independence High School in the Glendale Union High School District after two shots rang out while students were reporting to class. Officers from the Glendale Police Department responded to the shooting and released information through social media assuring followers that the incident was isolated and the school and surrounding community were safe.[296]

A student was shot in the leg on the football field of Santee High School. A second person was shot shortly afterwards down the street from the high school, near Maple Primary Center. Police responded to reports of gunshots fired at Santa Maria High School shortly before 4 in the afternoon. There were no classes in session as it was a Saturday but a football game was taking place on campus. Police found a firearm on scene but did not apprehend the shooter.[298]

A student at North Mountain Middle School fired a gun in a restroom shortly before the beginning of classes. The student was the only person in the restroom and was not harmed.[299]

Two campus security officers at Modesto Christian School confronted a man in the parking lot on the suspicion that he was there to steal catalytic converters. After the man got back into his car and almost hit one of the officers, the other shot him. The suspected thief was hospitalized.[300]

While fleeing police pursuit on the evening of April 12, 2021, 36-year-old Christopher Marquez barricaded himself and a woman on the campus of San Diego High School. The following morning, police fatally shot Marquez when it appeared he was pointing his rifle at the woman. A gunman identified as Kevin Neal was on a shooting spree in the community when students at Rancho Tehama Reserve School went on lockdown after staff heard gunshots. Neal entered the school property and shot at the building but was not able to get into the classrooms. One student was hit by a bullet nonfatally and an unknown number of students and staff were injured by broken glass. Neal was killed by police at a different location.[311]

Two students and one teacher were shot at North Park Elementary School in the San Bernardino City Unified School District by the teacher's estranged husband. The teacher and one of the students died, and the shooter committed suicide.[312]

Four students were shot outside of June Jordan School for Equity in San Francisco, California. All four students survived the shooting. Four teens entered Edison High School and shot an athletic trainer several times in the leg and stomach. His wounds were not life-threatening, and the teens were later arrested. The incident was believed to be a gang initiation process.[318]

Bryan Oliver, 16, walked into a Taft Union High School classroom and shot two students who allegedly bullied him. One suffered a critical chest wound and the other was not directly hit. The classroom teacher, Ryan Heber, was able to persuade Oliver to drop his weapon.[319]

John Luebbers, 44, shot and killed the principal at Schnell Elementary School. According to police, Luebbers was a custodian who was enraged after a disagreement with Sam LaCara, the school's principal. No children were injured, though one child was present at the time of the attack.[320]

Brandon McInerney, 17, shot and killed 15-year-old Larry King in the computer lab of Green Junior High School. Because King was gay, the incident was initially deemed a hate crime. However, in 2011, the prosecution dropped that allegation, and McInerney was tried as an adult.[324] The case inspired the 2013 documentary, Valentine Road.[325]

An 18-year-old student was shot outside King City High School's auditorium.[326]

During an argument between a group of people, a student was shot and wounded in the elbow at Centennial High School.[327]
  • March 22, 2001 in El Cajon, California
Jason Hoffman, 18, shot and wounded three students and two teachers at Granite Hills High School before being shot by a campus police officer. Hoffman later committed suicide in prison.[328]
  • March 5, 2001 in Santee, California
Charles Andrew Williams, 15, entered a Santee High School classroom and opened fire, killing two and injuring 13 students. He was sentenced to a sentence of 50 years to life.[329]
  • December 1, 2000 in San Diego, California
A 15-year-old student accidentally shot himself at Junipero Serra High School. Earlier in the day, he threatened to shoot another student.[330]
  • June 8, 1999 in Lynwood, California
An unknown gunman shot and killed two girls outside Lynwood High School. The incident was thought to be gang-related.[331]
  • February 8, 1996 in Menlo Park, California
Douglas Bradley, 16, drove past the basketball court at Mid-Peninsula High School and began throwing money to attract the attention of his fellow students. He then shot a 14-year-old boy in the leg and sprayed bullets into a nearby classroom. Soon after, he turned the handgun on himself and committed suicide.[332]
  • February 14, 1994 in Belmont, California
Gile W., 15, allegedly shot and killed Edwin Sims, 15, at Carlmont High School. The witness to the death of Sims left the country, and the murder charges against Gile W. were not pursued as of August 1994.[333] [36]
  • February 22, 1993 in Los Angeles, California
Robert Heard, 15, shot and killed Michael Shean Ensley, 17, at Reseda High School.[334]
  • May 1, 1992 in Olivehurst, California
Eric Houston, 20, shot and killed three students and one teacher, wounding ten others in an armed siege at Lindhurst High School. According to prosecutors, Houston was seeking retribution for a failing grade. He was sentenced to death on September 17, 1993.[335]
  • April 23, 1991 in Compton, California
A teenager fired a handgun at a security guard who had been chasing him and three friends off the property of Ralph J. Bunche Middle School. However, instead of hitting the security guard, the bullet struck and killed 11-year-old bystander, Alejandro Vargas.[336]

Colorado

  • August 17, 2021 in Denver, Colorado
Shmuel Silverberg, an 18-year old student of Yeshiva Toras Chaim, was shot dead outside school. Denver police connected Silverberg's death to five suspects who were accused of a string of crimes that took place that day, including stealing a car, robbing a business, and murdering another man. Police said they did not suspect an anti-Semitic motive in connection with the crime.[337]
  • August 11, 2021 in Colorado Springs, Colorado
A man was shot in the parking lot of Mark Twain Elementary School. As of the morning after the shooting, the man was expected to survive. School had not yet opened for the year and police said there did not appear to be any threat to students.[338]
  • May 7, 2019 in Highlands Ranch, Colorado
Two students at STEM School Highlands Ranch shot and killed 18-year-old Kendrick Castillo and injured eight others.[339]
  • December 13, 2013 in Centennial, Colorado
Karl Pierson, 18, entered Arapahoe High School and shot a 17-year-old female student. After killing her, he committed suicide by shooting himself. Police also found two Molotov cocktails in the school.[340]
  • December 6, 2010 in Aurora, Colorado
Luis Enrique Guzman-Rincon, 20, shot and wounded a 17-year-old female student outside Aurora Central High School. She was left partially paralyzed, and the incident was ruled gang-related. Guzman-Rincon was sentenced to 35 years in prison.[341]
  • February 23, 2010 in Littleton, Colorado
Gunman Bruco Eastwood opened fire in the Deer Creek Middle School parking lot. He shot and wounded two eighth grade students. In October 2011, Eastwood was found not guilty by reason of insanity due to a history of untreated schizophrenia.[342]
  • September 27, 2006 in Bailey, Colorado
Duane Roger Morrison, 53, entered Platte Canyon High School and took six female students hostage. He sexually assaulted them, and then shot and killed one of the hostages and himself.[343]
  • April 20, 1999 in Columbine, Colorado
In one of the bloodiest and most publicized cases of school violence, Eric Harris, 18, and Dylan Klebold, 17, killed twelve students and one teacher at Columbine High School. They made home videos before the attacks detailing their intentions and apologizing to their parents. They committed suicide in the library after opening fire in the school library. Twenty-one students and faculty members were also injured. The case was one of the most deadly in U.S. history.[344]

Hawaii

  • January 28, 2014 in Honolulu, Hawaii
A 17-year-old student at President Theodore Roosevelt High School attacked three officers after they were attempting to remove him as a runaway. An officer shot the student in the wrist after the student stabbed one of the officers with a kitchen knife.[345]
  • May 23, 2011 in Pearl City, Hawaii
A student at Highlands Intermediate School allegedly found a Glock .45-caliber, semi-automatic pistol behind the school. He picked it up and was showing it to his classmates when it discharged. A different student suffered minor injuries after being hit by shrapnel. The student who found the weapon was later expelled.[346]

Idaho

  • May 7, 2021 in Rigby, Idaho
A sixth-grade student shot two other students and an adult before she was taken into custody. There were no fatalities.[347]
  • April 16, 1999 in Notus, Idaho
Shawn Cooper, 16, shot and wounded one student at Notus Junior-Senior High School.[348]

Montana

  • April 12, 1994 in Butte, Montana
Jason Osmanson, 10, shot and killed Jeremy Bullock, 11, on the playground at Margaret Leary Elementary School. Bullock reportedly bullied Osmanson.[349]

Nevada

  • September 3, 2021 in Las Vegas, Nevada
Police responded to reports of shots fired in the parking lot of Desert Oasis High School following a football game. On arriving, they determined that an individual had fired several shots into the air during a scuffle. No injuries were reported and no arrests were made.[350]
  • September 11, 2018 in North Las Vegas, Nevada
Kayin French, 16, was accused of shooting and killing Dalvin Brown, 18, near the baseball field at Canyon Springs High School during a planned fight.[351]
  • November 20, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada
A 16-year old student was found with a gunshot wound outside of Mojave High School after a fight involving 40-50 people. The boy later died at a local hospital.[352] [353]
  • April 22, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada
An 11-year-old boy was arrested after he brought a .45-caliber gun to Deskin Elementary School in his backpack. The gun discharged when he reached into his backpack, shooting a hole through a desk. No one was injured in the incident.[354]
  • October 21, 2013 in Sparks, Nevada
Jose Reyes, 12, opened fire on the basketball court of Sparks Middle School. A teacher tried to intervene and was shot and killed. Reyes then turned the gun on himself. There were two other male students injured in the incident.[355]
  • March 14, 2006 in Reno, Nevada
James Schoot Newman, 14, shot and injured two eighth grade classmates at Pine Middle School. Newman was sentenced to house arrest and 200 hours of community service.[356]
  • August 26, 1990 in Las Vegas, Nevada
Curtis Collins, 15, shot and killed Donnie Lee Bolden, 16, at Eldorado High School in the school's cafeteria. Collins said that he killed Bolden to end an ongoing feud.[357]

New Mexico

  • November 9, 2021 in Las Cruces, New Mexico
Police chased a carjacker into the parking lot of Mesilla Valley Leadership Academy, where he shot himself in the head. The incident took place before classes had started for the day.[358]
  • September 2, 2021 in Albuquerque, New Mexico
Shots were fired during a fight between students of Sandia High School and Albuquerque Christ Lutheran Church and School that took place in the latter school's parking lot. One person was injured.[359]
  • August 13, 2021 in Albuquerque, New Mexico
One 13-year-old boy shot and killed another boy during lunch at Washington Middle School. The victim was confronting the shooter, saying that he was bullying a third boy, when he was shot.[360]
  • December 7, 2017 in Aztec, New Mexico
A student shot and killed two other students at Aztec High School before also being killed.[361]
  • January 14, 2014 in Roswell, New Mexico
Mason Campbell, 12, shot three rounds at Berrendo Middle School with a sawed-off shotgun. Two students were wounded in the incident. There were reports that the student warned select students about the attack when he arrived at school that day.[362]
  • November 19, 1999 in Deming, New Mexico
Victor Cordova Jr., 13, fatally shot a fellow student in the lobby of Deming Middle School. It was the only shot fired and there were no other injuries.[363]

Oregon

  • August 7, 2021 in Portland, Oregon
A man was found dead in the parking lot of Gilbert Heights Elementary School early in the morning of Saturday, August, 7. Police found evidence that the man had been shot.[364]
  • May 13, 2021 in Merrill, Oregon
A man drove into the parking lot of Lost River Junior/Senior High School and fired three shots into the air. School had already been let out for the day but a baseball game was taking place on school grounds. The man fled the scene and was arrested soon after.[365]
  • March 24, 2021 in Salem, Oregon
Two 17-year-old boys were shot in the back in the parking lot of Four Corners Elementary School, one of whom died.[366]
  • January 11, 2019 in Eugene, Oregon
After being escorted outside Cascade Middle School for disrupting the school amid a custody battle, a man pulled a gun on police officers. The officers then shot and killed the man.[367]
  • December 12, 2014 in Portland, Oregon
Following an altercation that was assumed to be gang-related, three students and one 20-year-old were shot in the parking lot of Rosemary Anderson High School. One student was critically wounded, while the others survived minor injuries. All four were expected to recover.[368] [369]
  • June 10, 2014 in Troutdale, Oregon
A Reynolds High School student, 15-year-old Jared Padgett, shot and killed one student before exchanging gunfire with police officers. A physical education teacher was also injured. Padgett then entered a restroom stall and committed suicide. He allegedly wrote journal entries detailing the shootings.[370]
  • March 20, 2014 in Portland, Oregon
A student was shot and injured with a BB gun while in one of the locker rooms at Grant High School. The student suffered minor injuries.[371]
  • February 23, 2006 in Roseburg, Oregon
Vincent Wayne Leodoro, 14, shot a fellow student four times in the back in the courtyard of Roseburg High School. The student survived. Leodoro then walked to a nearby restaurant and threatened suicide. He later surrendered to police.[372]
  • May 21, 1998 in Springfield, Oregon
Kip Kinkel, 15, killed his parents and drove to Thurston High School where he opened fire in the hallway and cafeteria. He killed two students and injured 25 people. When he stopped to reload his gun, two students tackled Kinkel. He was sentenced to 111 years in prison without the possibility of parole.[373]

Utah

  • July 21, 2017 in Spanish Fork, Utah
A shooting occurred in the parking lot of Spanish Fork High School outside of school hours. Two men, a 19-year-old and an 18-year-old, were sitting in a car when the 19-year-old shot the other man in the arm. The injury was not life-threatening. The older man then fired three to five shots in the air. The suspected shooter left the scene, killing himself when officers pulled him over roughly two hours later.[374]
  • October 25, 2016 in Sandy, Utah
A 14-year old student at Union Middle School was arrested after shooting another student at a park just north of the school. The victim survived that shooting after undergoing surgery at a local hospital.[375]
  • September 11, 2014 in Taylorsville, Utah
An elementary school teacher who was carrying a concealed firearm was injured by fragments from a bullet and a toilet when her gun accidentally fired at Westbrook Elementary School.[376]

Washington

  • August 27, 2021 in Seattle, Washington
Two teenagers exchanged gunfire in the parking lot of Aki Kurose Middle School. A 17-year-old was transported from the scene in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds and a 14-year-old was arrested after fleeing the scene on foot.[377]
  • July 27, 2021 in SeaTac, Washington
T-Shaun Bennett, 31, was fatally shot on a basketball court adjacent to Tyee High School. As of the morning after the shooting, no arrests had been made.[378]
  • September 13, 2017 in Rockford, Washington
Sophomore student Caleb Sharpe was accused of bringing a rifle and handgun to school and shooting each weapon in a second-floor hallway shortly before first-period at Freeman High School. One student was killed and three were injured before a school custodian subdued the shooter.[379]
  • April 27, 2015 in Lacey, Washington
A student at North Thurston High School fired two shots into the ceiling with a .357 magnum pistol. The student was apprehended by a teacher before anyone was injured.[380]
  • October 24, 2014 in Marysville, Washington
Jaylen Fryberg, a student at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, opened fire in the school cafeteria. Four students were killed, and Fryberg committed suicide. One other student was wounded in the incident.[381]
  • February 22, 2012 in Bremerton, Washington
An Armin Jahr Elementary School student, 8, was accidentally shot when a fellow student dropped his backpack that contained a gun he had brought to school. The shot hit the student in the stomach, but her injuries were not fatal.[382]
  • August 14, 2008 in Federal Way, Washington
Omero Mendez, 26, was sitting in the parking lot of Lakota Middle School waiting to pick up a student when he was confronted by Luis F. Cosgaya-Alvarez, 16. Mendez was flashed gang signs and shot by Cosgaya-Alvarez. Mendez died of his injuries and Cosgaya-Alvarez was sentenced to 18 years in prison.[383]
  • January 3, 2007 in Tacoma, Washington
Douglas Chanthabouly, 18, shot and killed a fellow student at Henry Foss High School. The three shots that fatally wounded the student were the only shots fired.[384]
  • February 2, 1996 in Moses Lake, Washington
Barry Loukaitis, 14, entered Frontier Middle School and shot a teacher and two students to death. Another student was wounded in the arm. Loukaitis was sentenced to life in prison.[385]
  • January 12, 1995 in Seattle, Washington
A 15-year-old male student shot and wounded two students at Garfield High School. The student was reportedly bullied by his classmates.[386]
  • March 23, 1994 in Seattle, Washington
Brian Ronquillo, 16, shot and killed Melissa Fernandes, 16, at Ballard High School during a drive-by shooting. Ronquillo also shot a 16-year-old male who survived. The shooting was gang-related, according to court testimony.[387]
  • January 31, 1994 in Seattle, Washington
Darrell Cloud, 24, shot and killed a former teacher at Whitman Middle School who had assaulted Cloud since he was 13. Cloud served nine years in prison, but later received a $250,000 settlement against Seattle Schools.[388]

Wyoming

  • September 17, 1993 in Sheridan, Wyoming
Kevin Newman, 29, shot and injured four students in a field during gym class at Central Middle School before shooting himself. Newman later died in the hospital.[389]
