How to Connect Echo Dot to University Wifi
HallNet
Wireless Devices
Some devices (e.g. games console, Amazon Echo, Fire TV, etc.) are not able to connect to the eduroam wireless network. To connect these devices to the Wi-Fi in your hall bedroom you can use the 'Hallnet' Wi-Fi network. To use this Wi-Fi network you must:
- Register the wireless MAC address of your device: https://onboarding.lboro.ac.uk/mab
- Make a note of Pre-Shared Key (PSK) generated
- Enter this into your device when joining the 'Hallnet' Wi-Fi network.
The 'Hallnet' Wi-Fi network is only for devices which are not capable of connecting to eduroam and is only available in halls of residence.

Connecting a Smart TV to HallNet
Instructions to connect your Smart TV on campus.
Step by step instructions
For wireless and wired connection

Wireless Set Up
- First locate your Smart TV's wireless Mac address in the Network Settings Sections from the TV's menu
- Now you need to register the wireless MAC address for your device. You need to use your computer to register the Smart TV on HallNet

- Visit https://onboarding.lboro.ac.uk/mab and log in with your Loughborough Credentials
- Enter the wireless MAC address you found in this format xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
- Fill in the device name (of your choosing)
- Click Register, once this is done, go back to your monitor

- Select Hallnet, you may need to scroll. Enter the Preshared Key (PSK) shown in the Registration page and wait for the device to connect.
- Your Smart TV will let you know when it has connected. Log in with your own account. If you are prompted to log in to another account. PLEASE DO NOT. Click Change My Account and enter your own account information.

- Your device should now be ready to use.
Wired set up

- To use your Smart TV over our wired network. All we need from you is to register the MAC address of your device, you will need to use your computer to register the device on HallNet, and then you're good to go!
- To locate your Smart TV wired MAC addressyou will need to navigate to the Network settings section from the TV's menu.

- Log on to https://onboarding.lboro.ac.uk/mab with your username and password.
- Enter the MAC address in the format xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx and press the Submit button.

- Fill in the information requested, and click on Register.
- If you make a mistake or want to change a setting, click on the above Registration for HallNet link.
Connecting an Amazon Echo Dot to HallNet
Step by step instructions
BEFORE YOU START:
- You need to have / create an Amazon account
- You will need to download the Amazon Alexa app to your phone or computer
- You will need another device along with your phone to register the device.

Download the Amazon Alexa app to your phone or computer. Sign in with your Amazon account or create a new one.

Plug in the Echo Dot, and wait for it to switch on (it will light up)
In the Alexa app - select the device: Echo Dot
Click Connect to Wifi, the app will tell you go to your phone's Wi-Fi settings, do this. When in Wi-Fi settings, select the Echo Dot's wifi network - will be in the form of: Amazon-xxx (x - number).

Once successfully connected, go back to the Alexa App - you will be presented with a confirmation message. Click Continue.

Before selecting the Wi-Fi network, you will need to locate the MAC address of the device in order to register it and get it working on Hallnet. To do this:
- On the current page in the app, scroll to the bottom of the page, where the Mac Address will be displayed - note this down.

You will now need to register the device using a laptop / desktop:
- Visit https://onboarding.lboro.ac.uk/mab and log in with your Loughborough Credentials
- Enter the MAC address you found in this format- xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
- Fill in the device name (of your choosing)
- Click Register, once this is done, go back to the Alexa app.
In the app, select Hallnet, and enter the Pre-shared Key (PSK) outlined in the Registration page.
Wait for your device to connect, and make sure to change your phone's wireless network back to eduroam.
Connecting a Google Home to HallNet
Step by step instructions:
BEFORE YOU START:
- Please note - you will need to download the Google Home app on your phone. It is available in the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
- You will need to have / create a Google account.
- You will need to agree to turn on location permissions for it to operate efficiently.

Plug in the Google Home Device, it will light up on its own after a few minutes (It is always on when plugged in)

Download the Google Home app on your phone.

Sign in with your Google account (or create one)
- Accept the terms and conditions and follow the instructions.

The Google Home app will begin looking for nearby devices. The process will temporarily connect the phone to the Wi-Fi hotspot on the Google Home.

When it is successfully connected, you will hear a sound - click "I heard it" when you hear it.

Follow the setup instructions until you reach the Wi-Fi settings. Before you connect the Google Home to the network, you will need the MAC address to register the device, to find this:
- Scroll to the bottom of the page displaying the Wi-Fi networks, OR
- Click the 3 dots at the top of the page and select Show MAC Address

You will not need to register the device using a laptop / desktop:

- Fill in th device name (of your choosing)
- Click Register, once this is done, go back to the Google Home app.

The app will let you know when it has successfully connected.
Connecting a Fire TV Stick to HallNet
Step by Step instructions
BEFORE YOU START:
a) Please note - the Amazon Fire Stick is incompatible with Laptop / Desktop devices. It requires a monitor to function effectively.
b) You will need to have / create an Amazon account

Plug the Amazon Fire Stick into the HDMI slot on your monitor (you can use the extender included for a better connection), and into the power socket.

Follow the instructions on the screen, using the remote included to scroll through it.

The device will begin scanning for Wi-Fi networks. Before choosing a network you need to locate the MAC address, to do this:
- Scroll past all the network options until you get to the end square that states the MAC address, note this down.

You will now need to register the Fire TV Stick using a laptop / desktop:
- Visit https://onboarding.lboro.ac.uk/mab and log in with your Loughborough Credentials
- Enter the MAC address you found in this format- xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
- Fill in the device name (of your choosing)
- Click Register, once this is done, go back to your monitor

6. The Fire TV Stick will let you know when it has connected. Log in with your own account.
It may show another account and ask if you would like to continue as that account, PLEASE DO NOT. click Change my account and enter your own account details.

Once you have logged in, the device is now ready to use.
Connecting a Chromecast to HallNet
Step by step instructions
BEFORE YOU START:
Permissions: Make sure your location is on. Go to settings in the Google Home app and change permissions in order to find nearby devices

Plug in Chromecast and install the Google Home App by navigating to g.co/home/setup on your Chromecast-supported Android device.

Open the Google Home app by tapping the app icon on your Android Device. Tap Get Started or find the device card > Set up. Then choose what Google Account you want to link to your Chromecast.

The Google Home app scans for nearby devices once found Click Next if you have multiple devices select from a list the ones you want to connect.

The TV will display a code. Click Yes on the app after seeing the code. If the code doesn't display, then tap Try Again.

Follow the steps until the Wi-Fi Connection Before you connect the Chrome Cast to the network, you will need the MAC address to register the device, to find this:
- Scroll to the bottom of the page displaying the Wi-Fi networks
- Alternatively click the 3 dots at the top of the page and select Show MAC Address

Follow the remaining steps and you will be notified when the Chrome Cast is connected.
Other Devices
Unfortunately Sonos speakers are not supported by the universities HallNet network.
Bluetooth Moodlight

Connecting your device
Connecting a Bluetooth Moodlight:
- Make sure your Bluetooth is switched on
- Search for the device name and click on the device
- Your device should now be paired to your mobile phone
Bluetooth Speakers

- Make sure your Bluetooth is switched on
- Search for the device name and click on the device
- Your device should now be paired to your mobile phone
Garmin Edge 25

Connecting a Garmin Edge 25:
- Make sure your device is setup and turned on beforehand
- Go to www.Garmin.com/intosports/apps and download the Garmin Connect Mobile app to your smartphone
- Bring the smartphone within 10m of your device.
- On the Edge device select the "down arrow" Settings > Bluetooth > Pair Smartphone
- Open the Garmin Connect app and follow the on screen prompts
- Your device should now be paired to your mobile phone.
Amazon Echo Spot and Google Homehub
BEFORE YOU START:
You must first find out the MAC Address of your device and initially set up your device at home not on campus. These can be found in the following:
- Amazon Echo Spot - Alexa App
- Google Homehub - Google Home App

Once you have retrieved MAC address details, you will now need to register the device using a laptop / desktop:

Click Register, once this is done, go back to the app.

Apple Homepod
BEFORE YOU START:
You must first find out the MAC Address of your device and initially set up your device at home not on campus. This can be found in the following:
For obtaining the Apple Homepod's MAC address you must:
- Wait for at least 8 seconds while the HomePod proximity Setup sheet appears on iPhone.
- Tap the i to show the HomePod serial number, model, and Wi-Fi MAC address
Step 1
